CARL HARGREAVES
Carl has studied yoga since 1990, and began teaching in 1998.
Taught to meditate by his uncle Edwin Coppard from the age of five, also trained
in martial arts, gymnastics and sports as he grew up. Read Philosophy (PPE) at
Oriel College Oxford, but went on to train and work as a professional contemporary dancer.
Spontaneously started yoga: - a routine of daily stretching and breathing to repair the damage of high impact training. This self discovery of yoga went on for more than ten years.
In 1993 Carl began following Iyengar's seminal book "Light on Yoga",
and in 1994 began attending classes.
Carl is thankful to have studied with many wonderful teachers. His first teachers were primarily from the lineage taught by Vanda Scaravelli and Mary
Stewart; particularly Giovanni Felicioni, who encouraged Carl to start teaching in 1998. Later he studied other styles in depth: Dynamic yoga
(a variant of Ashtanga Vinyasa) with Godfrey Devereux; Sivananda yoga with Nirayni; and Viniyoga with Sylviane Gianina, (who is now Carl's teacher) and Paul Harvey. Attended many other workshops and classes: eg. with Kaustaub Desikachar, Richard Freeman, Tias Little...
Many excellent teachers of martial arts and dance have also trained Carl, particularly Charles Renault, (Pentjak Silat), and the brilliant staff at the Rambert School. H.H. the Dalai Lama, Sri Ramana Maharshi, Krishnamurti,
Fr. Laurence Freeman, Sri Muji, and Satyananda have also been indispensable guides and a huge inspiration. Carl's understanding of their teachings, especially on "Advaita", underlies his approach to yoga.
Most grateful thanks to all!
Carl continues to study yoga in it's various guises: recently pursuing knowledge of healing and nutrition, and Ayurveda.
He mainly teaches in North London:
classes, workshops,
Yoga one to one.
